The short version: Sunte does not record or store your audio, and has no servers of its own. Recognized text is sent to your chosen translation provider only to translate it. Your settings stay on your device.
Who this covers
This policy describes how the Sunte Chrome extension ("Sunte", "we") handles information when you use it to recognize spoken Japanese and translate it into English, Korean, or Chinese.
What Sunte does not collect
Sunte has no backend of its own. We do not create user accounts, store transcripts, or build a profile of you.
How recognition works
Speech recognition uses your browser's built-in Web Speech API. When you tap the microphone, your browser (Google Chrome) processes the audio to produce text. This audio handling is performed by your browser and is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. Sunte itself never receives, records, or stores the raw audio.
How translation works
To translate, Sunte sends the recognized text only (never audio) to a translation provider you select in Settings:
- Google (free): text is sent to Google's public translation endpoint to return a translation.
- Cloud API (your key): text is sent to the Google Cloud Translation API using the API key you provide. The key is stored locally on your device and is used only to authenticate these requests.
These requests include the text to translate, the source language (Japanese), and your chosen target language (English, Korean, or Chinese). They are subject to Google's applicable terms and privacy policy.
What is stored on your device
Your preferences — listening mode, target language, theme, translation service, and any API key — are saved with chrome.storage.local. This data never leaves your browser, is not synced by Sunte, and can be cleared at any time by removing the extension or using "Reset to defaults" in Settings.
Permissions
- Microphone — requested at runtime so the Web Speech API can hear Japanese. Used only while you are listening; revoke it anytime in Chrome's site settings.
- storage — to save your preferences locally.
- Host access to Google's translation domains — so translations can be fetched.
Children
Sunte is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and, for material changes, note it on this page.
